Ohio’s Health Value Needs to be Better Now

You Probably Think that Ohioans are Better Now, Better Now...
You Only Say that ‘Cause You Made Your Rounds, Made Your Rounds.

But here’s the reality:
Ohio is ranked 46 out of the 50 states and the District of Columbia according to the 2019 Health Policy Institute of Ohio (HPIO) Health Value Dashboard—landing the Buckeye state in the bottom quartile. This means that Ohioans are less healthy and spend more on healthcare than people in nearly all other states.

The study concluded three key findings:

  1. Access to care is necessary, but not sufficient.
  2. Tobacco use drives poor health.
  3. Ohio’s per person spending for older Medicaid enrollees is 1.4 times more than the U.S. rate.

So, what can the physician community do to live the OSMA mission of bringing physicians together for a healthier Ohio?

Help us launch the Healthier Ohio – 2020 & Beyond Initiative introduced last month by OSMA President Susan Hubbell, MD. This initiative will focus on three key public health themes: treating patients with pain; diabetic patient care; and overall access to care. Within each theme, the OSMA will create advocacy initiatives, educational solutions, communication campaigns and strategic partnerships to address the major barriers to providing care—as well as highlight and share best practices to work towards measurable outcome improvements.
