Medical Board Clarifies Telemedicine Rules with State Emergency Expiring

Since many of the medical board’s telemedicine rules were halted in early 2020 due to COVID-19, allowing much more leeway in treating patients remotely, OSMA has received many questions from physician offices about the current status of the rules and how the board will handle telemedicine once the pandemic has subsided.

On July 14, 2021, the Medical Board approved new telemedicine FAQs. These FAQs provide guidance on telemedicine in Ohio and the Medical Board’s resumption of enforcement on September 17, 2021 of its laws and rules requiring in-person visits in certain situations.

Keep in mind that there is current legislation pending (Ohio House Bill 122) that could alter many of the board’s telemedicine rules. OSMA is actively following the legislation and will report any changes that are made to Ohio telemedicine laws.
