Medical Board Issues Clinical Guidance on East Palestine Train Derailment Clean Up

Earlier this week the State Medical Board of Ohio issued guidance for all physicians and healthcare workers in the region around East Palestine. If you practice in the region or know someone that does, please be sure to review and share this:

Dear Ohio Provider,

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) has asked us to share the following important information with you as a health care provider in the region around East Palestine.

ODH is working in East Palestine with the Ohio Emergency Management Agency, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. EPA, and Columbiana County General Health District to help the residents there in the aftermath of the recent train derailment. Air testing, municipal water testing, and private water wells tested thus far show that test results are within safe limits established by the U.S. EPA.

Some health care providers may see patients from the East Palestine area who present with symptoms that could be associated with chemical exposure or a range of other potential causes. This provider guidance has been prepared to help you with the diagnostic assessment and treatment of such patients. This information will only be an FYI to other providers in the region who are not likely to see any such patients.

This important information has been prepared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (CDC/ATSDR), and the Ohio Poison Control Collaborative, with input from Marek Greer, MD, MPH, FACOEM, Director of Occupational Medicine and Employee Health at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, who is a subject matter expert in chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosive, and emergency preparedness.

If you need additional information or guidance or have questions, please contact The Poison Control Center at 877-603-0170.
